My love affair with Winkies began before we’d even set foot in Brightlingsea – let alone bought a business and moved here!
It all started on a cold winter morning in January 2015. My mother, returning from a weekend trip to Brightlingsea, raved passionately about a quaint, local fish and chip restaurant as she unpacked her bags. “Their chips are even better than MY chips!” she gasped.
It was then that I knew. I simply must try these chips.
And try them I did. The chips, the cod, the sausage in batter, the onion rings – oh the list went on, and by late 2015 one thing was clear: I was addicted. Each time we visited this quaint coastal town my mind would wander to the fish and chips shop just a few seconds down the road from our B&B. Whether a hot summers day or a cold blustery evening, it was as though I could hear it’s name on the wind. “Winkies … Winkies …”
By December 2015, I thought my dangerous passion for Winkies could get no stronger. I was wrong.
On entering the now oh-too-familiar premises, I saw three words on the menu I had not seen before. Those three words changed my life forever:
I wouldn’t say we moved to Brightlingsea SOLELY to be close to this fantastic fish and chip restaurant, with friendly staff and good prices. And I hasten to admit that “we love a Winkies” has become a regular saying at our B&B. (And I’ll slyly mention here that we do provide our guests with crockery, cutlery and condiments to enjoy a Winkies take-away at the B&B …) But should we ever move away, I know the memory of that delicious deep fried Marsbar and those excellent chips will forever linger in the wind.
“Winkies …. Winkies ….”
