We’re often asked what it’s like to run a B&B. It’s certainly not your typical 9 – 5! While I’m sure every B&B has it’s own unique routine, here’s a little insight into a typical day for me and Darius at The Courtyard Rooms:
6:30am – Prepare Breakfast
After getting up and getting ready, we begin the ‘long commute’ to work – walking down the stairs! Darius (aka ‘chef’) prepares the kitchen and I get the breakfast room ready for our guests.
7:30am – Breakfast!
This is probably my favourite part of the day. We meet such interesting people and breakfast is our chance to chat and make sure that everyone is happy. Plus, I know that Darius cooks a mean fry-up, so watching everyone leave with a belly full of yummy food always makes me smile!
9:30am – Clean Kitchen & Breakfast Room
Once breakfast is over (and we’ve had a bite ourselves), we give the kitchen a good clean and freshen up the breakfast room ready for our guests to bring home takeaways throughout the day.
11am – Housekeeping
Once our guests have checked out at 11am, we begin the ‘housekeeping’ rounds. Darius makes the beds, and I tackle the bathrooms. Between us, we clean the bedrooms and make sure our guests are stocked up on teas and coffees, towels and toiletries. (Insider secret: we usually watch trashy daytime TV while we clean!)
1pm – Anything and Everything Else!
From one day to the next, this part of the day will be different! We fix things, touch up the paint work or give the rooms an extra-deep clean. We test our fire alarms, check the drains, organise the laundry, de-weed the courtyard – whatever needs doing! It’s also the time for shopping – food, furnishings, paint and toiletries. On a rare quiet day, we’ll sneak in a walk along the estuary or a cheeky dip in the sea!
4pm – Check In Opens
No matter what the day entails, we’re always home by 4pm so we can greet the guests arriving that evening. Darius is Mr Meet-And-Greet, and helps our guests get a lay of the land. And I catch up on emails and voicemails, do the (boring) admin tasks, and the (less boring) creative tasks – like writing blog posts!
9pm – Relax
By 9pm, all our guests are here and settled in to their rooms. Me and Darius usually jump into our onesies, grab a mug of hot milk and stick on Netflix for an hour or so, before heading to bed. Mind you, if it’s been a particularly busy day, we might substitute that hot milk for a glass of wine – or two!
One thing we’ve learned from our year running The Courtyard Rooms, is that every day will be different. Some days we’ll be rushed off our feet, and other days we can put our feet up – and there’s no planning which in advance!
It’s definitely a ‘lifestyle choice’, but a hugely fun and interesting one, and we wouldn’t change it for the world.
